Line art is based on a counter and empty space. The shirt may look light and elegant, but requires more careful preparation than suggested simplicity of the drawing. The result is the continuity of the line, its thickness and the relation to the colour of the garment.

Choose a contour that you can recognize

Not every motif will retain character after removing the filling. There are well-known silhouettes: face profile, leaf, mountains, animal or simple hand gesture. If the details of the coat or the colour of the eyes are relevant, the outline itself may not be sufficient.

Try to reduce the drawing first to several major lines. Check it out without signing it. If the theme is clear only after a long explanation, it is worth to improve the contour or leave a small accent of filling. Minimalism does not require removing everything at all costs.

The thickness of the line should be assessed after determining the dimension

A thin line on a large illustration may become too delicate after decreasing. Therefore, first choose the orientation width of the marking and then refine the thickness. Special attention should be given to places where lines meet or run close together.

In the vector file, check if the scaling also changes the thickness of the contour. Before submitting the production version you can change the contours into shapes, keeping a separate editable copy. Clean edges and sufficient pixels are needed in the raster file; sharpening alone does not replace the correct drawing.

Empty space works too.

A small theme does not need to be automatically placed in the middle of a large printing field. On the chest it may look like a discreet sign, and on the back like an conscious illustration with breath. Note the distance from the collar and the proportions relative to the width of the clothes.

If you add a signature, don't stick it to the contour. Leave a space that will also be visible on a smaller shirt size. When vertical, check that the theme does not seem accidentally lowered down.

Print or contour embroidery?

The printing allows you to view the drawing as flat graphics. The embroidery introduces an invoice of thread and requires the contour to be translated into stitches. These are not two identical effects, even if they use the same sketch.

With a very small illustration, the choice of technique needs to be discussed individually. Too dense cross-sections may make it difficult to read the embroidery. If you care about thread, prepare a more cost-effective version and see the guide embroidery from your own drawing. Requirements for printed contours will also be relevant graphics without background.

Simple way of checking the project

Prepare two versions: subtle and with a slightly stronger line. Print them on paper in the planned dimension and put them on your shirt. Rate up close and from a few steps. It helps to distinguish consciously a delicate effect from a project that you just can't see.

For valuation, please provide both options and information as to whether subtlety or recognition is a priority. If the theme is to hit the shirt, hat and hoodie at the same time, do not automatically assume the same size and technique. Each product has a different surface and is arranged differently while wearing.

THE MOST COMMON QUESTIONS

FAQ

Does the line art have to be drawn with one line?

No. It can consist of one continuous contour or several cost-effective elements. The consistency of style and readability after reduction is important.

Can a minimalistic printing be colorful?

Yes. One contrasting color or small accent is often enough. The palette is worth choosing along with the color of the clothing.

Can you use a very thin line?

The possibility depends on the scale, technique and material. It is best to evaluate the file in the target dimension instead of taking one thickness for each application.
